On February 15, 2016, over 100 students interested in careers in real estate attended a career fair tailored just for them! The Real Estate Club, one of UW-Madison’s largest student-run organizations, hosted its 16th annual event at Union South, attracting nearly 40 employers seeking both undergraduate and graduate students seeking summer internship and full-time positions. Recognized as the top public real estate program in the country, students leverage their classroom knowledge when communicating with industry employers, in the hopes of securing an internship or full-time position in the coming months.
This year, MBA students were in for a special treat, with one hour of speed networking with select firms that expressed interest in meeting MBA candidates. After the one hour speed networking, dinner was served, giving all students the opportunity to network with an employer and ask questions prior to visiting their booth at the fair. The career fair was held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and students and employers also had the option to continue their conversations during the informal closing reception. Sharon McCabe, the club’s faculty advisor, was pleased with the result, saying, “As the economy continues to recover, we expect a busy hiring season for prospective employers, and the Career Fair is a great opportunity for students to make industry contacts and practice their elevator pitches.”
The firms in attendance came from New York, Washington DC, California, Texas, and numerous cities in the Midwest; and feedback from both students and employers was overwhelmingly positive. Employer representatives agreed upon the fair’s success; noting the students in attendance were sharp and well-prepared. The company representatives who graduated from UW-Madison were identified with a Bucky Badger sticker on their nametags, and the room was full of them. Their presence speaks volumes to the impact the Badger network has on the industry.
The success of this year’s Career Fair was due largely to the collaborative efforts of the Real Estate Club, the Wisconsin Real Estate Alumni Association, the Graaskamp Center for Real Estate, and countless alumni out in the field. In addition to the Career Fair, the Real Estate Club plans a variety of industry speakers and field trips throughout the school year; and the Career Fair is one of many events that showcase why the Wisconsin Real Estate Program is consistently ranked as one of the best programs in the world.
