2014 MBA Arts Showcase

by Matt Dreier Wednesday, April 16, 2014

The arts…are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.” ― Kurt Vonnegut

During April of each academic year, the Wisconsin MBA Program hosts an event for its newly admitted MBA candidates. Over the course of three days, activities are held that connect these prospective students with current MBA faculty, staff, and students. It’s an excellent opportunity for them to explore the program, and for us to showcase everything that the Wisconsin MBA has to offer.

One of the premier events of the annual On, Wisconsin! Weekend is the MBA Arts Showcase. This event is put on by the Artful Business Collective (ABC) - the MBA student organization focused on exposing the student body to arts and cultural events both on campus and around the city. Recent ABC-sponsored events and excursions include performances by Forward Theater Company, Madison Symphony Orchestra, and the Farm/Art DTour. Each event draws in MBA students from across the specializations, sparking some amazing conversations about the importance of art in everyday life.

The Arts Showcase highlights performances by MBA students, staff, and faculty. With the admitted students and their families in attendance, there is usually quite an excited, packed crowd for the event. This year we had 11 acts, featuring more than 40 performers, ranging from capoeira and acroyoga to a brass quintet and a barbershop quartet. Even our professor of microeconomics performed in an act! However, the Arts Showcase isn’t just a performance event - there is also a visual arts component in the lineup. Many WSB students and staff members submitted art pieces for the event this year, which included drawings, paintings, stained glass art, textiles, and even furniture.

The most exciting part of the Arts Showcase for me was the chance to see my colleagues display or perform their artistic passions. There is so much talent in the Wisconsin School of Business, and it is great to be a part of an event that provides the opportunity for everyone to show it off to their friends and family! It is also why I enjoy being a part of ABC. It provides a way for us to give back to our community, start a dialogue about the role of arts in everyday life, and support participation in arts events.

If you are a newly admitted MBA and get a chance next year, be sure to join the Artful Business Collective at one of our fun events. We will be glad to have you!!
