MBA Students Get Exposure to Advancing Technology and Emerging Risks at National Conference

by Jenna Herr, Class of 2019 Tuesday, May 29, 2018

It was a treat for Wisconsin MBA students to escape 7+ inches of snow this April to attend the RIMS National Conference & Exhibition in San Antonio. Besides the good weather, students were uplifted by the futuristic atmosphere of the conference—and not only because of Travelers’ dancing robot and tiny Roombas; educational sessions at RIMS focused heavily on technology and emerging risks.

Mark Watson, CEO of Argo Group, discussed the evolution of the industry with some urgency in his presentation, “The Speed of Today: How Insurance Can Set the Pace in a Technology-Driven World.” Customers’ high expectations of choice, transparency, speed and price require nimble insurance professionals to help them understand and manage risks. Mark emphasized the importance of innovation within the insurance industry to service new business types and to facilitate new ideas, not impede them. Lastly, Mark discussed the challenges and opportunities of executing creative risk management strategies.

Other educational sessions about cyber insurance, blockchain, and emerging technologies reiterated the importance of innovation and speed in the insurance industry. In addition to educational sessions, RIMS provided an opportunity to network with proud Badgers from around the country, and most importantly, to envision ourselves in Risk Management roles in the future. It was an experience that I will take with me for years to come.
