Given annually, the award recognizes an individual who displays distinguished service in mentoring Ph.D. students and has made exemplary contributions to the advancement of the human resources management field.
Over the course of his career, Gerhart has advised 13 Ph.D. students—six at the Wisconsin School of Business, six at Cornell University, and one at Vanderbilt University. He has also served on the dissertation committees of additional Ph.D. students. Since his arrival at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2000, his doctoral seminar in research methods has been required for Ph.D. students in Management and Human Resources.
"I have been very fortunate to have wonderful mentors throughout my career and also to have had the chance to pay it forward by being a mentor to others,"says Gerhart. "I have enjoyed watching 'my' students progress through their own careers, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with, learn from, and get to know each of them."
This is not the first time Gerhart has been recognized by the Academy of Management. In 2013, he was inducted as a fellow, an honor received by roughly one percent of current AOM members. In 2012, he received the Herbert Heneman Jr. Career Achievement Award from the HR Division. He has also received the Scholarly Achievement Award (best article), International Scholarly Achievement Award twice (best international article), and Outstanding Paper Award (best convention paper) from the HR Division.
A widely cited researcher, Gerhart’s work focuses on employee compensation and motivation, international management, and employee retention. He has been published in the Academy of Management Journal, Annual Review of Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and many others. He has authored several books, including leading textbooks on employee compensation and human resources.
Gerhart will receive the Thomas A. Mahoney Mentoring Award in August 2018 at an AOM meeting in Atlanta.
