Anne P. Massey

Professor - Operations & Information Management

Anne Massey (PhD Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), is a Professor of Information Systems at the Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously, she was the Dean’s Research Professor at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Prior to joining the UW-Madison in 2017, Dr. Massey spent 22 years at IU where she served in many leadership roles at the school, campus, and university levels. Many roles leveraged Dr. Massey’s ability to lead innovative, collaborative initiatives. She served as Associate Vice President for all 8 IU campuses and Associate Vice Provost for the IU-Bloomington campus. In these roles, she advanced faculty-facing initiatives, including development and implementation of technology systems. Among many leadership roles within the Kelley School, she served as founding IS department chair, led the creation of the top-ranked MS in Information Systems program, and served as doctoral program chair. Dr. Massey also co-founded the campus-wide Center of Excellence for Women in Technology, the nation’s first and only large-scale interdisciplinary, university-based initiative to encourage and promote the participation, empowerment, and achievement of women in technology. At IU, Dr. Massey was widely respected for her efforts to advance faculty, students, and staff. She was recruited by UW-Madison to serve as WSB Dean; she served one semester.
Dr. Massey’s research focuses on focuses on how IS and technology can be used to support individual, group, and organizational performance. She is particularly interested in the extent to which technology features and contextual factors affect performance, and under what circumstances. Her recent work has centered on the efficacy of 3D virtual environments as collaborative learning platforms. Her work applies to many contexts, including industry virtual teams and distance/online learning environments. She has been the recipient of competitive research grants from the National Science Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Advanced Practices Council of the Society of Information Management, the Center for Innovation Management Studies, as well as foundation grants from several firms. Her research has garnered industry-based support and funding and field work with several companies including Eli Lilly, IBM, and Nortel, among others.
Dr. Massey’s research has been published in leading journals including Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Decision Sciences, European Journal of Information Systems, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and the Journal of Management Information Systems, among others. She currently teaches courses in innovation and collaboration, and management of IT.
