Mission, Vision, and Values

Mission: We cultivate and disseminate ideas through research and educational programs in areas relating to strategic risk management, decision-making under uncertainty, business analytics, and actuarial science. These activities both inform business and public policy decision-making and propel the delivery of highly valued applied educational programs.

Vision: We are globally recognized as thought leaders in domains relating to the strategic management of risk, business analytics, actuarial science, and insurance. Through the excellence of our scholarship and the quality of our educational programs, we positively influence our profession as well as the lives of our students, alumni, and those whom they touch.

Values: We have a passion for learning and strive for excellence in knowledge creation. We aspire to be a critical component of the circle of knowledge, both learning from and sharing with academic peers, industry experts, and students in our program.

2018: Inaugural meeting of the MBA Risk Management and Insurance Advisory Board

2017: Designated a Global Center of Insurance Excellence by the Insurance Information Society

2015: Center of Actuarial Excellence Status Renewed

2015: Hickman-Larson Chair Endowment Fulfilled

This endowment fund was created to recognize the defining contributions and leadership of James (Jim) C. Hickman and Robert (Bob) E. Larson, pioneers in the actuarial science field and the academic environment at the Wisconsin School of Business. Their efforts laid the strong foundation that maintains our reputation as one of the leading actuarial programs in the world. Although we are not actively campaigning, donations to sustain the fund can be made through www.supportuw.org.

2014: Began offering "Business Strategy for Emerging Risk and Insurance Leaders" course in partnership with The Institutes

2013: Technology-Enhanced Learning in Actuarial Science grant project completed

2011: Capstone Certificate in Actuarial Science Launched

2009: Designated a Center of Actuarial Excellence

We recognize and appreciate the value of being a CAE school for recruiting high-quality high school students to UW-Madison, employers wanting to hire our students, as well as support of our program in learning outcomes and new research.
