Since my time in Madrid is coming to an end, I knew it was time to engage in one of the most exhilarating cultural experiences this city has to offer. Going to a Real Madrid soccer game. My 3 friends and I purchased 4 tickets in the upper tier for 50 euros and we were set to attend the Real Madrid vs. Deportivo Coruna game at 7:45 Thursday evening.
For those who don’t follow soccer, Real Madrid is ranked first in La Liga which is the Spanish soccer league. Since they are doing well in the standings, they didn’t start many of their star players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, and Bale. I was looking forward to seeing them play, but the atmosphere and talent on the field did not disappoint. Eventually though, Marcelo was subbed in because they were losing 2-0. Within 10 minutes, the team had scored 3 goals and had won the game. It was incredible!
There is a section in the enormous stadium dedicated to fans who lead songs and cheers throughout the game. Every time a goal is scored, the Real Madrid theme song is played and the crowd goes wild. It’s like putting the most intense American football fans into one stadium… You could tell this team was their fan’s pride and joy. When I wore my Real Madrid sweatshirt shopping the following weekend, I got thumbs up, conversations were started, and was high-fived multiple times.
It was great to see how the city comes together for sports just like we do in the United States. Being a sports lover, this experience was one that I will never forget.
