Hi everyone!

I’m back with another blog post, but this time, I’m in Milan! After two long weeks, I’m finally feeling accustomed to my new Italian lifestyle. However, getting comfortable in my new environment came with many challenges.

Within a day of my arrival in Milan, I was stricken with an illness that kept me bedridden for four days straight. I was anxious and frustrated because those around me seemed to be adapting to the abroad life just fine. However, after a doctor’s visit, a lot of rest, and an unhealthy amount of saltine crackers, I am finally back on my feet.

This blog post is for those who are struggling in a new environment. My main takeaway from this experience is to take care of yourself—both mentally and physically—and to give yourself time. Not everyone adapts at the same pace. It can take days, weeks, or even months. Do not be discouraged because in the end, you’ll be happy to be exploring outside of your comfort zone.

For those planning to travel abroad, here are a few tips to keep yourself healthy and happy:

  1. Drink a LOT of water. Even if you think you drank enough, you didn’t. Drink more.
  2. I know when you get there you’ll want to venture out and explore, but give yourself a day to rest and recuperate. Your body will thank you.
  3. Take cold showers! This will help fight off illnesses that you may catch while your immune system is weaker from travel.
  4. Emergen-C and Airborne are your best friends. Take them your first few days there.
  5. De-stress and relax! Stress and anxiety weaken your immune system and make you more prone to illness.
