Behavioral Economics and Investing: Understanding What Motivates Financial Decisions
In 1996, Alan Greenspan referred to investors in the market as having "irrational exuberance." Most of us who pay attention to the financial markets understood exactly what he meant:  investors taking risks inappropriate to their goals.  Some of the most successful investors, though, are also those who are willing to take on good risks when others are fearing risk.  What is the psychology behind all of this?  How can people be sometimes irrationally exuberant and other times shun risk all together?  Behavioral economics attempts to answer these types of questions by coupling scientific research on the psychology of decision making with economic theory.  In this talk, Dr. Justin Sydnor of the Wisconsin School of Business will discuss research from behavioral economics on the key drivers of financial decisions that helps to explain these varying attitudes people have about financial risk.
