Derek WiitalaApplied Security Analysis

Derek Wiitala is a second year master’s candidate in the Applied Security Analysis Program. He received his undergraduate degree from the Wisconsin School of Business in 2018, graduating with distinction and with a BBA in finance. While in school, Derek is a teaching assistant for an undergraduate course in introductory finance. He also enjoys actively participating in the Capital Management Club.

This past summer, Derek had the exciting opportunity to intern with Nuance Investments in Kansas City, Missouri. There he covered the agriculture equipment industry and worked closely with Industrials analyst, Jack Meurer (ASAP class of ’16). During the summer, Derek filled the role of an entry-level analyst, pitching five ideas and completing one industry research report.

Previously, Derek was also a summer intern with Phoenix Investment Adviser, a NYC-based hedge fund. There he worked closely with distressed equity analyst and portfolio manager, Stefan Lingmerth. During the summer, Derek pitched two equities that the fund bought for their long/short portfolio.

Derek also interned for four weeks with Riverwater Partners after completing his six week long internship at Phoenix Investment Adviser. At RWP, Derek initiated coverage on three large cap stocks and applied various Environment, Social, and Governance principles to the companies he researched to determine if their stocks met the criterion of a socially responsible investment.  

Derek looks forward to satisfying his intellectual curiosity by gaining a comprehensive understanding of financial analysis and is sitting for the CFA Level 2 in June.

In his free time, Derek enjoys fishing, playing intramural sports, and helping mentor younger students interested in finance
