Jeff Hammes joined the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis in 1985 and has been a partner since 1991. In 2010, he became Chairman of Kirkland's 15-person Global Management Executive Committee. He is serving his third term in the role. He has led Kirkland through a period of significant growth. During his tenure as Chairman, Firm revenues have more than doubled from $1.4 billion to over $3.2 billion and profits have surged from $720 million to approximately $1.9 billion.

Jeff concentrated his practice on structuring and negotiating complex business transactions including mergers, acquisitions, leveraged buyouts and going private transactions prior to becoming Chairman.

Jeff has been integral to the Firm’s expansion around the world. In the United States, he established Kirkland’s presence in the Bay Area as a founding partner of the San Francisco and Palo Alto offices and led the opening of the Firm’s office in Houston. He led Kirkland’s entrance into Asia with the opening of the Hong Kong office in 2007. He also led and oversaw the significant transformation and growth of the Firm’s offices in New York and London.

The Best Lawyers in America has recognized Jeff every year since 2006 and Crain's Chicago Business has named him to “Who's Who” in Chicago Business every year since 2012. According to Chambers Global, which has recognized him as a leading lawyer every year since 2001, clients described him as a “lawyer who grasps the big picture with every transaction.”

He holds a J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and a B.B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is admitted to practice law in Illinois and California. Jeff is a Certified Public Accountant and worked in the tax department at Arthur Andersen before becoming a lawyer.

In addition to serving on the Wisconsin School of Business Dean's Advisory Board, Jeff is on the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law Dean's Advisory Board, the Board of Trustees of the Ravinia Festival Association, the Board of Directors of LEAP Innovations and the Board of AJC Chicago.
