PhD Minor and Minor Proposal Form Information

Current Business Students Only

The Ph.D. Minor Proposal Form must be filed with, and approved by, the Wisconsin School of Business at the time the preliminary warrant is requested. The preliminary warrant will not be requested until this form is filed in the Ph.D. Office (a minimum of three weeks before the final preliminary examination). If changes in coursework are subsequently made to those originally approved by your advisor, you must have your advisor sign off on those changes or course substitutions or you must file a new Ph.D. Minor Proposal Form showing the revised course plan.

Basic Requirements (10-12 credits)

A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained in the minor. Ordinarily, only one course (maximum three credits) of independent study is allowed (for instance 699, 799, 999). You may not use 990 or 890 (research and thesis) courses for your minor. No more than five credits completed five or more years prior to admission to the Ph.D. major may be used. Courses taken 10 or more years ago may not be used. Courses taken for pass/fail or for audit may not be used. Courses with grades of S (satisfactory) or Cr (credit) are acceptable.

The Two Minors: Options A and B

Option A

Requires a minimum of 10 credits in only one department/major outside of the Wisconsin School of Business and has the name of that department/major (for example: Sociology). See individual department for specific requirements, as many require more than 10 credits. Option A requires signatures of your major advisor and minor department.

Option B (Distributed)

Requires 10 to 12 credits in two or more departments inside or outside of the Wisconsin School of Business and outside of your major. Option B requires signatures of your major advisor.

Please note: The preliminary warrant will not be requested until this form is filed in the Ph.D. office, 3115 Grainger Hall. If changes in coursework are subsequently made to those originally approved by your advisor, you must have your advisor sign off on those changes or course substitutions or you must file a new Ph.D. Minor Proposal Form showing the revised course plan.
