An article on health care operations, co-authored by Professor Urban Wemmerlöv (with Nancy Hyer at Vanderbilt University and John Morris, MD, at Vanderbilt Medical Center), has received the 2009 Best Paper Award from the Journal of Operations Management, the top-ranked journal for empirical research in operations management.
The authors conducted a performance analysis of an integrated trauma unit at an academic medical center. They used a case study to examine how an organizational redesign in a “focused hospital unit” affected processes and practices, and investigated operational, clinical, and financial outcomes that resulted from such a change. Their research suggests that a focus-based approach can be a positive element in health care system design.
Wemmerlöv is executive director of the Erdman Center for Operations and Technology Management and the Kress Family Professor of Productivity and Quality.
