IRS Proposes Crackdown on Valuation Discounts:
What You and Your Family Business Need to Know
Presented by DeWitt Ross & Stevens and Smith & Gesteland
Tuesday, October 18
Breakfast Buffet 7:30 - 8:00 AM
Program 8:00 - 10:15 AM
SkyView, 8th Floor, Fluno Center
For many years, family business owners have reduced the impact of gift and estate taxes by discounting the value of interests in their businesses transferred to the next generation. On August 2, 2016, the IRS issued proposed regulations that, if finalized, will limit and, possibly eliminate, the use of valuation discounts. While the final regulations may ultimately differ from the IRS proposal, it is important for family business owners to understand how the proposed regulations could impact gift and estate tax planning.
This presentation will help you understand that impact.

Philanthropy may arguably be what matters most for family businesses. As new charitable giving models have emerged and as philosophies regarding how to best employ financial resources for social good evolve, keeping 'family' in philantrhopy has become more challenging. In this interactive session, we will explore new trends and paradigms relating to family business philanthropy, including:
- Creating a lasting and strategic philanthropic plan
- Doing well by doing good - social entrepreneurs, impact investing and the future of philanthropy
- Using social media and technology to engage and inspire 'next generation' philanthropists

Where Will Your Next Good Idea Come From?
In her latest blog entry, FBC Director Sherry Herwig notes that "seeking out new opportunities to learn and grow, especially if it puts you outside of your comfort zone, can be a breeding ground for new ideas. It can be as simple as sitting next to someone you don't know at a conference, a meeting, or networking breakfast."
