UW-Madison students engage in innovative, applied learning experiences that expose them to different cultures, languages, and business practices around the world thanks to funding and programmatic support from CIBER.

“The conference allowed me to get out of the classroom and look up from the textbook to learn what current experts in the region had to say about the Middle East. My favorite part was an interview with former Ambassador Ryan Crocker. His in-depth assessments an on-the-ground experience of the current situation in Afghanistan made his comments a fresh relief from the typical news media reports about the area.”

“The FDIB Vietnam trip was one of the best professional experiences of my career. It provided a unique and enjoyable opportunity to learn about the economic, political, and cultural context of Vietnam and the unique challenges that organizations face in doing business in Vietnam. It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet faculty from other institutions and draw on their perspectives in learning about and understanding the Vietnam context.”

“Academically, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has a world-renowned undergraduate business program. I want to challenge myself to get the most out of HKUST’s rigorous academics. Outside of classes, I look forward to rubbing shoulders with peers from all around the world. I’d like to see class projects, the news, issues, and the business world from their viewpoints... Study abroad is a chance for any young person to step out of a comfort zone, take risks, and learn how to be adaptable; it’s a way to better understand the world around me.”

At the Middle East Institute conference, I was able to hear insightful arguments about politically relevant topics in the Middle East through every sort of lens imaginable, ranging from a professor at Tel Aviv University to a former specialist head of CIA operations.”

"The site visits on the FDIB to Indonesia were especially good. We were exposed to a variety of organizations, including the US Consulate, a local private university, and Indonesian multinational conglomerates, as well as small family-owned businesses. As expected, we saw some factories that would not meet OSHA's standards, but we also visited some local businesses with very progressive human resource practices, such as incentives for quitting smoking and losing weight."

The best parts of my experience with GBP included learning how to manage a virtual team in an international context while conducting research and developing recommendations for our client. Working on a cross-cultural real life business problem cannot be matched in a classroom setting… I felt it was the best learning experience of my semester.
