EAB Seminar: 3D Printing, Robotics, and the "Internet of Things"

In the marketing channel and supply chain seminar courses, MBA students discuss how the design of supply chain networks must consider the tradeoffs between operational efficiency and degree of responsiveness. On October 16, 2013, the concept of tradeoffs was echoed and brought to life by Kevin O'Marah, chief content officer for SCM World and EAB member, when he kicked off the annual executive advisory board meeting with a timely seminar entitled 3D Printing, Robotics, and the "Internet of Things."

Sales & Operations Planning with Cisco SystemsEvery year, imbalances in demand and supply cost companies millions of dollars, as such imbalances result in out-of-stock situations, excess inventory, and significant discounting. To help students fully understand these challenges, the center partnered with Cisco Systems for an applied learning exercise in sales and operations planning (S&OP), led by Mitch Haynes, senior manager, sales and operations planning, for Cisco Systems.

To close out this fall’s applied learning events, MBA students participated in two events focused on supply chain analytics. Pete Lukszys, senior lecturer and director of applied learning, led a workshop on defining analytics. Pete approached the topic of analytics from an IT application perspective. Specifically, MBA students were introduced to the three core functions of analytics: reporting, prediction, and visualization.

The Grainger Center Hits the Road:

MBA Students Visit Rexnord, MillerCoors

On November 8, the center's MBA students traveled to the supply chain industry and applied practices outside of the academic classroom setting. The trip included site visits to both Rexnord and MillerCoors. Prior to departing for the trip, students were asked to submit two questions, one for each company, to further enhance the learning objectives of the trip.

On November 15, 2013, BBA students and center staff headed to Neenah, Wisconsin, where they were greeted by a crew of Badger alumni and Kimberly-Clark employees for a day-long site visit that included an overview of Kimberly-Clark’s supply chain and a tour of the Neenah Cold Spring Facility.

Kimberly-Clark’s mission is “leading the world in essentials for a better life,” and a high level of supply chain sophistication is required to meet the needs of their consumers—25 percent of the world’s population, in 37 different countries, use a Kimberly-Clark product daily. And, with 141 years of history, the company had a few things to teach aspiring supply chain professionals.

Up to the Challenge:

Wisconsin Teams Head to Michigan State University for Supply Chain Competitions

It was cold in the early morning hours of October 24, 2013, when MBA students David Berrios, Matthew Bruemmer, and Eric Buechele, along with senior lecturer Pete Lukszys, began the annual road trip to East Lansing, Michigan, for the Supply Chain Challenge case competition. Despite a bit of early snowfall, the team arrived at Michigan State Uniersity in the early afternoon, joining eight others teams from top-ranked supply chain schools. On November 7 and 8, 2013, a team of three undergraduate supply chain management specialization students, accompanied by Center Director Verda Blythe, traveled to Michigan State Shortly after arrival, the team received a simulation overview with information on the challenge and training on how to use the software. As typical for Badgers, the students used the large group setting as an opportunity to meet and socialize with students from other schools.

The Wisconsin Undergraduate Specialization in Supply Chain Management

Growth in the undergraduate specialization in supply chain management has been the trend over the last several semesters, and fall proved no different, with specialization enrollment approaching 100 students. The fall semester also included several new events for specialization students.

September was a busy month for specialization students and staff with several career-focused events. The semester kicked-off with a new welcome back dinner for returning students at Brickhouse BBQ, followed by a semester staple, the From A to Z: Careers in Supply Chain Management program. This semester’s A to Z event featured center alumni Jake Dean (MBA '09) from Cisco Systems and Brian Figueroa (BBA '13) from Georgia-Pacific.
