We at the Wisconsin School of Business are pleased you will study in Madison! You must have been nominated by one of our partner schools to participate in the exchange program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Nomination deadlines are March 1 (for fall semester, beginning in September) and September 15 (for spring semester, beginning in January). After your nomination, we can assist you in your application process and preparation for a successful experience.
Once you have been nominated by your home institution, you will receive an email from our office inviting you to submit the following application materials to the International Programs office in the Wisconsin School of Business.
You must submit high quality electronic versions of these documents with appropriate signatures in order for us to issue you the paperwork necessary to obtain a visa and admit you to the university.
Application materials are due by March 15 (for fall semester) and October 1 (for spring semester).
1. Complete the online application.
You must apply online before sending materials to our office. You will apply through the University of Wisconsin System admission application. Exchange students to the University of Wisconsin-Madison requesting a J-1 visa are required by federal regulations to demonstrate proof of sufficient funds on deposit. Exchange students to the Wisconsin School of Business must demonstrate financial support of at least $9,000 USD per semester ($18,000 USD for an academic year). This can be done one of three ways:
a) You financially support yourself and have the $9000 in a bank account that is in your own name: fill out the “Student information” section on the Certificate of Financial Support form. Then, either have the bank provide a signature and seal on the last section of the form OR provide a current bank statement signed by the bank in addition to the Certificate of Financial Support form.
b) Someone else financially supports you (for example one of your parents): fill out the “Student Information” and “Commitment of Support” sections on the Certificate of Financial Support form. Then, either have the bank provide a signature and seal on the last section of the form OR provide a current bank statement signed by the bank in addition to the Certificate of Financial Support form.
c) An organization financially supports you: fill out the “Student Information” and “Commitment of Support” sections of the Certificate of Financial Support form AND provide an official letter from the organization stating the amount you will receive from them.
Scans must be high quality and we may ask you to send in an original if needed for additional verification. Note that a specific amount must be stated in U.S. dollars or with an exchange rate provided by the bank.
We recommend you obtain two original copies of any bank statements. Send one scanned to International Programs with your application and keep one original for your visit to the United States Embassy or Consulate to apply for your visa.
