The Morgridge Center is UW-Madison’s center for public service – connecting students, faculty and academic staff with nonprofits and the community through volunteerism, service-learning and community-based research. Check back each week for great service opportunities you can get involved in.
Be a Host for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Be a host at one of the largest VITA Sites in the country! With tax season officially upon us, help those who are looking for additional assistance with their income tax forms. Each year the South Madison VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Site provides free income tax preparation to thousands of low-income workers, seniors, and those with disabilities. VITA programs are crucial to people who need their tax refunds to pay bills and meet current expenses. As a host, you would welcome people and get them ready for the tax preparer. We also need bilingual hosts (Spanish/English) to translate when necessary. Tax preparation knowledge is not required.
Hosts should be able to attend one three-hour shift once a week from January 25 through April 14. Training will be provided. Those who volunteer will receive recognition and letters of reference for jobs and school. Because VITA is a growing tax program recognized throughout the country, this opportunity can be listed on resumes. For more information, visit volunteeryourtime.org.
Exercise Your Database Skills with Volunteeryourtime.org
Help nonprofit organizations recruit volunteers by cleaning up their listings on VolunteerYourTime.org. Some volunteer opportunity listings are tagged incorrectly and we need a volunteer to go through them and make changes. You will mainly be working in our volunteer database and contacting volunteer coordinators by phone to verify information. Schedule is flexible but must be willing to come in during business hours (8:00am-4:30pm M-F).
Volunteers must be personable and have basic computer skills. For more information visit volunteeryourtime.org or contact Victoria Budynsky, Volunteer Coordinator, at (608) 246-5487.
