Meet Deb Tobin and Jamie Marsh Finco, the advising team for the Finance, Investment and Banking major! by Katie Coon

It’s Advising Awareness Week in the Wisconsin School of Business!  Check back each day this week to meet the academic and career advisors for your major and learn how to make the most of your advising experience.  Today, meet Deb Tobin and Jamie Marsh Finco, the advising team for the Finance, Investment and Banking major.

About Deb

As your academic advisor, my role is to

  • work together with you on course selection, sequencing, and credit load,
  • consult with you about questions you have regarding Wisconsin BBA academic policies,
  • assist you in planning for the types of courses you will take if and when you study abroad,
  • refer you to academic and other campus resources as appropriate, and more.
I am originally from Rushford, Minnesota, so all you Vikings fans on campus can count me among you. Sorry, Packer backers! I received my undergraduate degree from UW-River Falls and my law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul. After working nearly 20 years in the legal field, I decided to become a student once again, and pursued my Master’s in Counseling from UW-Madison. During that program when I spent my practicum year working in the L&S Career Services Office, I discovered my passion for working in higher education with university students. Establishing and maintaining one-to-one relationships with students is one of my greatest joys and privileges. In my free time I love to spend time with family and friends, hike, read, sing, watch movies, and follow Badger and University of Oregon Ducks athletics. I’m a season ticket holder for Badger men’s basketball, so many a winter evening or afternoon you’ll find me at the Kohl Center cheering on the team!

About Jamie

As your career advisor, my role is to partner with you to help you make well-informed decisions about all aspects of your career, including:

  • resume, cover letter and interview skills preparation
  • career options in finance and other industries
  • employer research strategies
  • networking strategies
  • evaluation of employment offers and more!
Originally from Onalaska, Wisconsin, I always knew I was a Badger at heart and decided to attend UW to pursue my BA degree in Spanish. After graduating from UW, I attended UW-LaCrosse where I obtained my Master’s Degree in College Student Development and Administration and gained experience in career services, athletics, admissions, international education and academic advising.  I began my professional career at Loyola University Chicago where I worked as an Admission Counselor and also coordinated diversity outreach efforts with the Chicago Public Schools. While I loved the excitement of the big city, Bucky was calling me to come back to Madison. I was fortunate to join the Business Career Center six years ago where I advise students, connect with Finance alumni and work with employers on behalf of the career center.  In my free time, I love to travel, dance, sing, work out, watch movies and football games and spend time with family and friends. I have a sweet tooth, so you will always find a bowl of chocolates in my office! How to Schedule an Appointment with your Advisors
