Volunteers needed for tax preparation by Katie Coon

Interested in business? Looking for more accounting experience? Want to give back to the Madison community? Consider volunteering to help others prepare their taxes.Progress Through Business is a national non-profit focused on serving marginalized and economically challenged communities through business partnerships, networking and research to empower people towards financial security. They provide free tax preparation and financial literacy to low- and moderate- income residents in the Madison area, and are looking for dedicated people with a passion to serve.  Especially needed are volunteer tax preparers late January through mid April.  The program gives volunteers the opportunity to make a difference in the Madison community while gaining resume-building skills with practical applications.

Research shows that on average, Progress Through Business puts an extra $500 into the pockets of the taxpayers they serve in just forty-five minutes of volunteer assistance.  For a low-income employee with an $11/hr wage this is comparable to a 3% increase in wage. This makes a big difference to members of the low-income community!

Currently, the organization is looking to recruit volunteers willing to train in basic tax prep around Nov/Dec and then assist filing taxes between late January and April 15.  There is no cost to the volunteer to receive training and after successful completion of volunteer they can provide the volunteer with an excellent reference.
