Two Things to Do Before Graduating This December by Kelly Cuene

If you are a business school senior who plans to graduate this December, there are a couple of steps you need to complete before marching down that commencement aisle.

First, be sure to declare your intention to graduate in the Student Center of your myUW account. (Questions about this? Check out the Office of the Registar website for all sorts of graduation information).

Then, you should report your post-graduation plans to the Business Career Center. Whether you have accepted a full-time position, are taking some time off, plan to continue your education, want to start your own business or are doing something else, we want to know what you'll be doing and how we can help you reach your goals.

Post-graduation plans can be reported right in your BuckyNet account and if your plans change, you can always update your account. Here's how to do it:

Click on the "Profile" tab on the top navigation menu. Then, click on the sub-tab that says "Internship/Post-Graduation Plans".

It looks like this:

Then click "Add New" at the bottom of the page and fill out the form. Everyone will need to fill out the top section of the form. If you are reporting a full-time job offer or acceptance, you'll also need to fill out the second and fourth sections.

Why does the BCC collect this information? One of the primary reasons is so that we know your status and can provide assistance and resources. If you're looking for a job, we'll contact you if we know of openings and opportunities - that can't happen if we don't know you're looking. On the flip side, if you've accepted a job, aren't seeking employment or are planning to attend graduate school, we won't fill your inbox with job opportunities.

Additionally, all of the post-graduation information is reported in aggregate form in our annual Year in Review publication, which helps students learn about potential employers, average salaries and familiarize themselves with organizations that recruit on-campus. The Year in Review is also utilized by many employers when evaluating their internship or full-time opportunities. The BCC also reports post-graduation information to publications like BusinessWeek and other media outlets.

If you have questions about reporting your post-graduation plans, please contact the Business Career Center at 608.262.2550 or stop in our office (3290 Grainger Hall). If you're a graduating senior who has never visited the BCC  - stop in and meet our advisors!
