How did the Wisconsin School of Business help you to accomplish your career goals?

WSoB helped give me a good educational foundation to get into a product management role. Because of its affiliation with the Center for Brand and Product Management and UW's great computer science program, Intuit recruited at WSoB. I was able to interview with Intuit and secure a job post graduation as part of their leadership development program. This served as an introduction to the software industry and helped me find a good fit for my passion to be creative and build businesses at the same time as a product manager. Now my energy is starting to focus on personal start up efforts.

UW has a great and active alumni group in northern California called the Bay Area Badgers. This group helped me connect and enjoy games with other fellow Badgers. Another group called Badger Entrepreneurship Forum is helping UW alumni in Silicon Valley connect and share their experiences in starting companies. I'm not aware of any other public university whose alumni share such a tight post-graduation bond. It helps a ton when you're trying to find that next job or get funding for that awesome start-up idea you have.

How did you hear about the Wisconsin School of Business?

The PEOPLE Program gave me the great opportunity of taking summer seminar/classes in different majors every summer of my high school career. The summer before my senior year in high school I studied at the Wisconsin School of Business. The classes were mainly informational sessions about the different majors and careers in business. This was my first exposure to Grainger and to the Wisconsin School of Business.

Why did you choose to pursue your degree at Wisconsin?

After visiting several universities I just couldn’t find any that called to my personality quite the way UW-Madison did. Here, at UW, I found that students seemed to have a great balance between social and academic lives. Balance, at the moment, was very important to me. The ability to have a social life, play sports, and study in classrooms taught by some of the best caliber professors in the nation as well as highly competent students seemed ideal.

What are your future career aspirations?

I am hoping to do an internship in an investment banking firm this summer and work either in business banking or investment banking upon graduation.

What are your favorite parts of Madison?

State Street, the Capitol and the Terrace can seem like very simple locations at times and, at others, they can be the most alive and fun venues in the nation.

Where’s your favorite place to study in Grainger Hall?

My favorite place to study in Grainger Hall would have to be the tables on the second floor of the library, all the way in the back next to the windows. Studying there early in the morning or at night can be very relaxing. From there you get all the natural light and you can see all the hustle and bustle between classes that makes this such an awesome college town.

What student orgs are you involved in both within the WSoB and around campus?

At the moment, I am not an active member of any student organizations. However, my freshman year I co-founded a community service oriented student organization on campus. I also am a scholar of the PEOPLE Program, Academic Advancement Program and a non-active member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Have you studied abroad? If so, where?

I studied abroad Fall of 2009 in Paris, France. I took courses at both ESCP Europe and Université Paris IV – Paris Sorbonne.

Have you held any internships? If so, where?

I interned with M&I Bank summer 2010 with their Business Banking division. I also interned during summer 2006 at the Dane County Centro Hispano.

What are your hobbies?

I love playing soccer, going Latin dancing with my girlfriend on the weekends. I also like watching movies and just going out for a drink with my friends.

What is one unique thing about yourself that no one would know?

I have never lived in one place longer than five years. I have moved around my whole life—from Mexico to the Dominican Republic, around the Dominican, from there to the US, and here I’ve moved around Wisconsin. I have also lived abroad in Paris, France. It’s made me a very open-minded and outgoing person because every single place we moved to was very different from the last in almost every aspect of a daily life.

How did you hear about the Wisconsin School of Business?

I graduated from high school in Germany. I knew that I was going to major in business, so once I decided on Wisconsin, it was obvious that I was going to apply for the business school.

Why did you choose to pursue your degree at Wisconsin?

I heard good things about Wisconsin while I was in Germany. I also liked what I saw from researching online both the school and the city, so I thought that it would be a good fit and applied. And the reason I wanted to study in the U.S. in the first place is because I love new challenges and changes. I lived in Europe all my life; I went to a boarding school in China for one year in 11th grade to experience China, but I had never been to the US before. So I figured that studying here would be a great experience. And it really is!

What are your future career aspirations?

My career aspirations are not really limited to a certain major. Instead, I want to have a career that is always changing and that always offers me new challenges. I want to be surrounded by very smart people from whom I can learn every day. And I want a career that allows me to use my international background and that exposes me to different cultures and people.

What are your favorite parts of Madison?

The Terrace and Bascom Hill. (I hate the climb, though!)

Where’s your favorite place to study in Grainger Hall?

The library.

What student orgs are you involved in both within the WSoB and around campus?

Collegiate Entrepreneurial Organization, Investment Banking Club, Wisconsin Consulting Club, Delta Sigma Pi

Have you studied abroad? If so, where?

I am basically abroad by studying here, so, no.

Have you held any internships? If so, where?

I am interning right now at Robert W. Baird & Company as a Private Wealth Management Intern.

What are your hobbies?

Soccer, working out, reading, skiing (have not done that in way too long), piano, and random YouTube videos.

What is one unique thing about yourself that no one would know?

I want to save enough money to start one or even multiple schools in China for kids from families that cannot afford an education for their children. I know people in China who are in such situations and as soon as I have the means, I would love to help them.

How did you hear about the Wisconsin School of Business?

I came to college undecided about my major and realized I had a strong interest in business with help from the Exploration Center for Majors and Careers. Ignite the Potential helped me learn about the Wisconsin School of Business and made me even more excited to apply.

Why did you choose to pursue your degree at Wisconsin?

I grew up with the University of Wisconsin and like to tease that my alumni parents brainwashed me as a child; however, I made this decision completely on my own. I love the city, the campus, the prestige, the value, the opportunities, but most importantly, I easily realized I belonged here from my reaction the moment I received my acceptance letter.

What are your future career aspirations?

I want to be a business leader working for a company that allows me to make our world a better place in some way. I want to drive improvements and work with others and to learn from them.

What are your favorite parts of Madison?

Living near State Street and the Capitol is amazing. I love the great restaurants, the farmers’ market, and seeing other walkers and bikers. I also enjoy the Terrace in warm weather and call Grainger my second home.

Where’s your favorite place to study in Grainger Hall?

I won’t give away my favorite, secret study space, but I will say that I appreciated having an office in the Undergraduate Lounge through my role in the BBA Student Government.

What student orgs are you involved in both within the WSoB and around campus? I stay very busy and am involved in a lot of activities:

  • 10-11:Vice President of Programming for the newly formed Wisconsin BBA Student Government: I am responsible for student organizations, school-wide events, and marketing. In this role, I have orchestrated more than five initiatives this semester while giving underclassmen leadership roles and guiding them through their projects.
  • Former Promotions Chair and Currently the Events Chair for the Underclassmen Outreach Committee: I am responsible for planning all the event details of Ignite the Potential.
  • myBiz ambassador for Wisconsin School of Business Undergraduate Communications Group: I work with staff and some students to generate content for the Business School Blog and promote it to students.
  • Undergraduate Program New Business Student Orientation Committee: I work with staff to improve the Business School Orientation by making it more fun for students and planning a third of the event.
  • Finally, I was given the title Wisconsin BBA Ambassador because I help with Information sessions for prospective students, volunteer with Wisconsin Welcome Week, and worked on a team to create strategies to enhance community in the Wisconsin School of Business.

Have you studied abroad? If so, where?

Yes! I studied in Florence, Italy last summer and had an amazing experience. I lived in a historic, Tuscan villa with other students from Wisconsin and the University of Michigan. My classes allowed me to learn about Early Renaissance art history from a Florentine art historian on museum and church tours, as well as Italy’s influence on Shakespeare through visiting the cities where some plays were set.

Have you held any internships? If so, where?

This past summer I had a Marketing Internship with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis.

What are your hobbies?

I love dance. I seriously studied ballet ages 5-15 and competed on a national level with my high school’s varsity dance team. I still love watching dancing and may randomly bust a move if the inspiration hits me.

What is one unique thing about yourself that no one would know?

This is a tough question! However, I will be honest and share a strange realization I have not told anyone: Even though I love being a Marketing and MHR major, my highest grade one semester was Managerial Accounting class (though not by too much). I did not expect it, but I really like learning about the tools business leaders use to make decisions. I hope I can use that knowledge and apply it to my chosen field of study.
