Do you remember your SOAR experience?  Do you want to make SOAR a great experience for incoming students?  Consider applying to be a SOAR peer advisor with the Wisconsin School of Business.

The Wisconsin School of Business is looking for peer advisors to orient and advise freshmen and transfer students during the summer SOAR program.  Each peer advisor will work with incoming students in small groups and on an individual basis to answer questions and concerns of the students and help them select and enroll for courses.  Responsibilities will also include delivering large group presentations with other peer advisors explaining how to read the class search timetable, assisting with web enrollment utilizing My UW, and providing referrals to campus resources. 

Applicants MUST be continuing students at UW-Madison (i.e. registered for fall 2012).  ALL continuing students (pre-business, business and non-business majors) are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

• Ability to work with a diverse group of incoming freshmen and transfer students with a variety of academic interests
• Ability to relate to students from a spectrum of cultural, economic, ethnic, and regional backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal communication, group facilitation, and public speaking skills
• Patience in working with groups of students
• Pride in UW-Madison
• Must be able to attend an interview and be available for all training sessions and the entire SOAR program
• Peer advisors may take summer session courses IF AND ONLY IF the courses do not conflict with interviews, training, and SOAR scheduled work time.

Time Commitments

• Interviews:  April 25, 26, and 27 (see application below for details)
• Training sessions: May 23, 24, 25, 29, and 30 from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.
• SOAR Dates: May 31 – June 29; July 9 – August 17; August 27 - 30
  • Peer advisors will work Monday – Friday from approximately 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.  Hours may vary each day.
  • Peer advisors cannot have other major commitments for the summer (including summer courses)
  • Hired applicants will also have the opportunity to work at SOAR for three days in January 2013

Compensation

• The wage is $9.00/hour
