Marlene J. Kremer is the director of appeals, claims resolution, and claims support for the TRICARE Division at Wisconsin Physicians Service. TRICARE is the health benefits program for active duty and retired military and their dependents. Marlene received her Bachelor of Arts degrees in elementary education and political science from the University of Northern Colorado and her Executive MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As director for TRICARE, Marlene oversees 150 employees who assist in processing over a million claims a week for the Department of Defense. She is responsible for direct management of $15 million in accounts receivable on a monthly basis and $40 million in healthcare benefit payments per month. As a driven advocate for holding down administrative costs for the Department of Defense, Marlene recently initiated a proposal—that was accepted—to maintain certain health care records electronically, which has resulted in annual cost savings of over $1.0 million. This initiative has enhanced security and improved ability to be more responsive to customer needs. Marlene specializes in turning around departments with negative performance records to revenue-generating centers for the corporation. Recent congressional action caused changes to benefits, resulting in receipt of over 8 million additional claims. This challenge was met by quickly identifying a team within TRICARE that made modifications to workflows and systems without the need to hire additional staff or incur additional overtime. Marlene is a tireless advocate for active duty and retired military health benefits. Her performance in her current role clearly speaks to her ability to maximize staff production and procedures while staying true to the mission of TRICARE. She has been recognized by the Wisconsin National Guard and United States Naval Institute for her work with military and their health benefits.
