Sustainability at Wisconsin

The Wisconsin School of Business has been recognized by the Aspen Institute’s Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey as the world’s 17th most innovative full-time MBA program, leading the way in the integration of issues concerning social and environmental stewardship into the curriculum. Our students understand how environmental and social responsibility is integral to the long-term success of a business.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a long history of leadership in the area of environmental studies and socially responsible business practices. For example, our students enjoy access to UW-Madison’s renowned Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, established in 1970 and renamed in 2002 for former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day.

Students across the UW-Madison campus have access to the Wisconsin School of Business Certificate in Business, Environment, and Social Responsibility (BESR), which offers a suite of courses that address the interrelations between business and its natural and social environment.

Students are also encouraged to participate in a variety of events and activities that serve as forums to exchange ideas and connect the business community with students and faculty interested in sustainability. Two student-led organizations are uniquely tailored to address these issues: Business Action for Sustainable Enterprise (BASE) and Net Impact. Through community outreach, academic programs, and member development activities, BASE has a mission of increasing the awareness and promoting the benefits of sustainability practices. By joining Net Impact, students gain access to a portfolio of programs on corporate citizenship and social entrepreneurship, and a growing global network that is already changing the world through business.
